Board of Director elections were recently conducted during the World Union of Wholesale Markets (WUWM) annual general meeting held in Lublin, Poland from 18-20 May 2016.

Hosted by the Lublin Wholesale Market JSC in Elizówka, in collaboration with the Union of Polish Wholesale Markets (SPRH), this WUWM conference was held under the theme: “Fresh Markets: Permanent Evolution in Times of Change”. More than 150 food market professionals from 28 countries explored issues such as modern green technologies supporting wholesale and retail markets, countering fake food on the market, the situation and future direction of central and east European markets, and the benefits and practices of introducing flowers to the wholesale market.

In 2015 the Italian Chapter of the Royal Photographic Society (CIRPS) joined forces with the World Union of Wholesale Markets (WUWM) to promote an international photographic competition which aimed to pictorially express the importance and love people have for their local food markets all over the globe.

The competition entitled: “I love my food market” drew attention to the role these food markets play in improving the availability of healthy and nutritious food to consumers, as well as the way markets enhance food security, and revitalize local communities.

A 'Rungis 2025' plan to invest €1 billion by 2025 has been revealed, with the aim to support the market’s long-term growth and sustainability. The plan has two phases that include the renovation of its cold storage facilities, as well as the development of a number of new facilities, which will result not only in an enlargement of its total capacity but also the renovation of 20% of the market.

Budapest Markets Impress the International Markets Community

The international launch of the 'Love Your Local Market' LYLM 2015 campaign was held in Lambeth Town Hall in London, UK on 30 April and was followed by a visit to Brixton Market. The launch saw the participation of six European countries: UK, France, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden and Ireland. Representatives signed a WUWM Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which unites markets in 16 countries for this May 2015 celebration.

World Health Day 2015 Launch from Rungis Market

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has decided to launch World Health Day 2015 on the Rungis Market in Paris on 7 April.

The theme for this year’s event is Food Safety. Unsafe food is linked to the deaths of an estimated 2 million people annually. With an increasingly globalized food supply new threats are constantly emerging. Food containing harmful bacteria, viruses, parasites or chemical substances is responsible for more than 200 diseases, ranging from diarrhoea to cancers. The WHO message is: Be informed to ensure that the food on your plate is safe to eat!

Croatian mandarin producers face a serious threat to their livelihood after the recent European ban on trade with Russia. Fully certified producers in the country are looking to sell their products on alternative markets. Russia has traditionally been a very important market for CRO mandarin, purchasing about 4 – 5000 tonnes per year. With harvest starting about 20 September, little time is being wasted to find alternative markets.

Foundations Laid for New Market in Shenzhen

Lille Market Renovation

An important renovation programme begun in 2001 designed to improve local competitiveness and provide tenants with new development opportunities is now complete on the 40ha wholesale market in Lille, France. Built in 1972, the existing buildings were enlarged in the renovations, allowing for the construction of 4000 m2 refrigerated stores.
