Torsten Berens, managing director of Hamburg’s Wholesale Market for Fruit, Vegetables and Flowers, has been appointed to the jury that will decide who will receive the 'Lebendige Stadt' Foundation Award 2008. In October 2008 he will meet with fellow jurors – people who have made a name for themselves in business, politics, government and academia, such as Hanover’s former lord mayor Herbert Schmalstieg, or Hella Dunger-Löper, Berlin’s Permanent Secretary for Building and Housing – to choose 'Europe’s Best Weekly Market'. The award, which also carries a cash prize of 15,000 euros, will be presented in November 2008 in Dortmund Town Hall. The award is open to all European towns, communities and operators of weekly or street markets; the deadline for entries is 31 July 2008. Market concepts and projects that are already running or about to be implemented are eligible if their special features are variety, quality and the presentation of produce, if they provide a place in a city or neighbourhood that encourages lively exchange and communication and if they are also exemplary in environmental terms. In line with the Foundation’s guiding principle of promoting best practices that can serve other communities as a model, special importance will be attached to innovative but economic schemes that can give a town long-term assurance that the level of quality it desires can be provided. "For many years Hamburg Wholesale Market has supported the growth of weekly markets in the metropolitan region," stresses managing director Torsten Berens. "And so I see my appointment to the jury for this year’s Foundation Award not only as recognition for the skills that the Wholesale Market has acquired in the course of its numerous national and international activities, but also as a special motivation to continue our engagement for weekly markets." Naturally, Torsten Berens is looking forward to receiving many entries from weekly/street markets in Hamburg metropolitan region, although, as he says, "I am very interested to see what innovative concepts European market operators present."
