Hamburg Glass Kitchen Competition

Three prize winners from Glasgow Education Service's Culinary Excellence Programme - David Thomson and Scott McLerie from Smithycroft Secondary School and Raymond Lafferty from Eastbank Academy - and 3 students from the Glasgow Metropolitan College - Seb Wereski, Arran McCredie and Andy Cruikshank - went out to compete in the Glass Kitchen Competition in Hamburg, Germany on 28 June. This event has taken place for the last four years and is organised by the Grossmarkt Hamburg. The Scottish team was accompanied by Bailie Gordon Matheson and Graham Wallace, Managing Director of Glasgow Markets and WUWM Chairman, as well as Ann Pope PT Home Economics, Eastbank Academy and Aileen McMonagle from the Metropolitan College. The pupils and students worked all day in the Glass Kitchen, watched by tourists and locals, in the square in front of the Rathaus alongside German students from the Hamburg chefs training college (Gewerbeschule fur Gastronomie und Ernahrung). They prepared 3 different outstanding evening menus for a dinner attended by 50 people from Hamburg and their guests. The Glasgow pupils and students attained first, second and third places. At the dinner the prizes were presented by Bailie Gordon Matheson and Bernhard Proksch, who were representing the Glasgow City Council and Hanseatic State of Hamburg respectively.
