This year the Living City Foundation "Lebendige Stadt" award for the best European Retail Market went to a 200 year old German green retail market in Nienburg at the Weser which receives some 250,000 visitors annually. The market was honoured with Euro 15,000 in prize money. Some 20 jury members including politicians, journalists and former mayors, as well as representatives of the German sport federation and the German soccer federation reviewed more than 100 submissions for "Best Practice" retail market role models. The criterion included diversity, quality and presentation of produce, as well as factors related to ecological and community support. Because the retail market in the historical centre of Bremen plays an important urban role, the retail markets Unser-Lieben-Frauen-Kirchhof and Domshof also received praise. "You can see every Retail Market in Europe as being the winner of this competition", informed Uwe Kluge the manager of Großmarkt Bremen GmbH (Bremen Wholesale Market). "These accolodates will ensure that Bremen's traders continue to deliver high quality and regional freshness to their customers".
