End of Year Address to the WUWM Membership

December 16, 2010

It’s my great pleasure to address WUWM members through this forum. Since taking office as WUWM Chairman in September it has been a most hectic period. It would seem that after several years of hard work for many in pushing the market agenda in Brussels, much is now coming to fruition! The last 3 months WUWM has been invited to represent the market sector in European Commission consultations on several occasions, namely in the High Level Forum for a Better Functioning Food Supply Chain (DG Enterprise), a group that aims to support the development of better industrial policy in the agro-food sector. We have also been active with the DG for Internal Market & Services, actively participating in the EC consultation on the European retail sector, especially as regards the recent retail monitoring report ‘Towards fairer and more efficient retail services for 2010.’ Additional to that, the WUWM Board of Directors and Secretariat are preparing for our annual meeting in The Hague in January, where important discussions on the future strategic direction and upcoming activities of the WUWM will take place. I thank those members that returned the recent survey so we can better understand the needs of our members. There are many activities and developments happening on markets throughout the world and as market managers it is important to participate in the sector internationally in order to be able to follow and participate in these activities/representations, continually developing our businesses which are very much in demand. I therefore hope to see you at WUWM conferences in 2011 and l look forward to your active involvement and support of WUWM as the year unfolds. My sincere wishes for a very happy and safe festive season and a most prosperous New Year. Torben Flinch - WUWM Chairman
