It is with deep sorrow that we learn of the passing of Mr Douglas John Noakes MBE. As a founding leader of today's World Union of Wholesale Markets (WUWM) and as one of its earliest Chairmen, Mr Noakes, a true gentleman, displayed a very high level of professional leadership combined with a classic touch of levity, together forming the characteristics that made him a successful leader, mentor and friend.

Mr Noakes, 83, is survived by his two children and two grandchildren. With his passing he now rests beside his wife Margaret, whom he married in 1952.

Mr Noakes first joined the Corporation of London in June 1950 having served in the UK navy the preceeding 2 ½ years. On 1 June 1964 he commenced work at London Central Markets as Principal Assistant. On 21 September 1967 he took up the position of Clerk & Superintendent. Awarded an MBE in 1974, Mr Noakes retired from the Corporation of London on 17 November 1991 and served as WUWM Chairman until 1994. In 2001 he became Master of the Worshipful Company of UK Butchers.

Mr Noakes will be missed by the food industry, the WUWM, and by all those that were fortunate enough to call him a friend.
