Developer Sought for UK Market
February 25, 2008

UK urban regeneration company, New East Manchester (NEM), is seeking a development partner for New Smithfield Market in Openshaw, east Manchester. Located less than two and half miles from Manchester city centre, the existing market, which has been operating on its current site since 1972, has approximately 30,000 m2 of lettable space on a 35 acre site. The site is currently 80% occupied with 42 businesses trading in fresh produce including fish, poultry, fruit and vegetables and flowers. This generates £250 million per year to the region's economy and provides 650 jobs. Eddie Smith, Acting Chief Executive for New East Manchester said: "We want to realise the potential of this important market for wholesale food suppliers within the North West. We are looking for an experienced and dynamic development partner to work with us to deliver an innovative and sustainable scheme for the region." Councilor Eddy Newman, Executive Member for Neighbourhood Services at Manchester City Council said: "Our vision for New Smithfield Market is to create a one-stop-shop for the catering industry rather than a purely traditional wholesale market which could include additional food industry related businesses. We are looking for proposals that show high quality design and good environmental and sustainability credentials." Interested parties should contact Dominic Walsh at New East Manchester on +44 161 231 9550 or e-mail d.walsh1@manchester.gov.uk. Expressions of interest must be submitted by 24th March 2008
