New Health Commissioner presentation before the EP

On 1 April, Androulla Vassiliou, the newly appointed European Commissioner for Health, delivered her opening address at a joint session of the Committees for Environment, Agriculture, Employment and Internal Market and Consumer Protection at the European Parliament. In setting out the priorities of her agenda, the Commissioner underlined the need for Europe to work together to deliver the high levels of public health and food safety that European citizens expect and demand. Mrs Vassiliou noted that Europe is the world’s largest food importer and as such she is aware of the situation regarding shortages and price rises as well as the need to safeguard quality standards of imported food. On the sensitive issue of animal welfare in transport, Commissioner Vassiliou plans to accelerate legislation and would implement the Action Plan on Animal Welfare.
