The Spanish national market association Mercasa in association with the wholesale market of Palma de Mallorca, Spain (Mercapalma) will host the next WUWM Conference. This event will take place in Palma de Mallorca from 20-23 April 2010. This WUWM Conference aims to initiate debate within the sector on the future trends for the markets industry, alongside the innovations, challenges and opportunities to be found in the management of wholesale and retail markets along. Under the theme “A Global Offer to Meet Demands of all Kinds” the conference sessions will include discussions on the new economic climate, environmental management as both responsibility and business opportunity, as well as the contributions wholesale markets can make to food safety and increased fresh fruit and vegetable consumption. The fundamental role that retail markets play in the commercial urban development of cities, and in fresh food distribution, is also to be analysed. The conference will provide information on the current wholesale market situation in Spain which sees Mercapalma as a clear example of the modern infrastructure and services, good management and efficiency to be found in the country. Additionally, Mercapalma also offers the largest concentration of wholesale offerings in the island of Mallorca as well as in the Balearic Islands. It has 120 companies serving a wide and diverse customer base, including the five municipal retail markets existing in the city of Palma alone. During the last years WUWM has substantially increased its membership incorporating many new markets in both Latin-American and Asia-Pacific and the two annual conferences of the association are of growing importance to the sector. WUWM now reaches out to more than 200 markets selling fruit, vegetables, fish, meat and/or flowers in 50 countries; markets that support and serve over 850 million people.
