[Budapest – 1st October 2024] The WUWM was among the participants of the Conference on Prevention of Food Waste held in Budapest, on the 1st of October 2024. The Vice Chairman, Ioannis Triantafyllis, represented the Union in this highly important event.
The United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goal 12.3 calls for halving global food waste per capita at retail and consumer levels and reducing food losses along the production and supply chains by 2030. In order to achieve this goal, the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, in association with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) organized the Conference on the Prevention of Food Waste on 1 October 2024 in Budapest. The goal of the conference was to encourage a dialogue on national food waste reduction programmes, their methods and results achieved so far, and to present good practices to support the efforts of countries in the European and Central Asian region to reduce food waste.
Having marked the fifth International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste on 29 September 2024, experts and observers from 17 countries reaffirmed that only a coordinated response can overcome the significant challenge of creating sustainable agrifood systems, by making them more efficient, inclusive, sustainable, and resilient.
The WUWM Chairman has emphasized that the WUWM is at the forefront of the battle against food loss and waste, working tirelessly to ensure that our members and the entire food supply chain gain the tools and knowledge they need to minimize loss in wholesale markets and waste in retail markets, while maximizing efficiency.
