    🌐World’s largest wholesale markets network
    🗺️+202 members + 52 countries

This morning, WUWM had the pleasure of visiting th This morning, WUWM had the pleasure of visiting the Seoul Agro-Fisheries & Food Corporation (SAFFC) and Garak Market in Seoul 🇰🇷.

The visit offered a fascinating look at how one of the world’s major urban wholesale market systems is adapting to the transformation of food distribution. SAFFC manages Seoul’s Garak, Gangseo and Yangjae Grain markets, while supporting market operations, logistics, food safety, distribution information and modernization.

A particular highlight was discovering the ambitious Garak Market Modernization Project: a five-phase redevelopment running through 2031, designed to strengthen logistics capabilities and develop smarter market systems. The project illustrates how wholesale markets can evolve while continuing to serve producers, traders, retailers and consumers at metropolitan scale.

We also learned about SAFFC’s role beyond wholesale operations, including Seoul’s School Lunch Program, which now serves more than 1,400 schools and distributes around 135 tons of agricultural, seafood and livestock products every day.

As traditional wholesale channels face profound changes—from the growth of large-scale retail and e-commerce to new consumption patterns—exchanges like today’s are invaluable for understanding how markets can remain efficient, resilient and closely connected to the communities they serve.

Thank you to the SAFFC team for the warm welcome and for sharing their experience and vision with WUWM! 🌱🤝🇰🇷

🇭🇰 WUWM visits Link Asset Management in Hong Kong 🇭🇰 WUWM visits Link Asset Management in Hong Kong

During our visit to Hong Kong, WUWM had the pleasure of meeting with Link Asset Management to learn more about its approach to managing and transforming Hong Kong’s fresh markets.

Link is one of the city’s major fresh market operators, with 49 markets across 13 districts. Since launching its renovation programme in 2010, Link has completed 52 market renovations and more than 59 market enhancement projects.

Our discussions explored how traditional wet markets can evolve into modern neighbourhood hubs while preserving their essential role in local communities. We exchanged on key challenges facing the sector, from changing consumer habits and rising operating costs to the growing demand for convenience and quality, as well as innovative responses including digitalisation, online-to-offline integration and new customer experiences.

The visit concluded at Lok Fu Market, providing a concrete example of Link’s approach to modernising fresh markets while maintaining their traditional character and connection with local communities.
A very interesting exchange on the future of fresh markets and the importance of adapting market infrastructure to changing urban lifestyles.

Thank you to the Link Asset Management team for the warm welcome and insightful discussions!

Ms. Valérie Vion, General Secretary of the World Union of Wholesale Markets (WUWM), was a VIP speaker at the Regional Symposium “Shaping the Future for Transforming Food Loss and Waste” in #Surat.

In her opening remarks, Ms. Vion highlighted the central role of wholesale markets in tackling food loss and waste, where decisions made within hours determine whether food is #eaten, #donated, #transformed, or #wasted. Drawing on global evidence and best practices from WUWM’s network of 300+ wholesale markets across 52 countries, she reinforced a clear message: #prevention first, #reuse second, #valorisation next, and #disposal only as a last resort.
From food donation systems to modern infrastructure and strong partnerships, her keynote reminded us that solutions already exist and that they can be #adapted, #replicated, and #scaled across Asia.
With sincere thanks to @fao and @cosambindia for their leadership and partnership in convening this important regional dialogue and driving action on food loss and waste.
