2025 Johannesburg Conference Report is ready !
The WUWM is pleased to announce the publication of the 2025 Johannesburg Conference Report, capturing the key discussions, insights and recommendations from its International Conference held in Johannesburg, South Africa, from 14 to 16 May 2025.
Returning to Africa for the first time in more than two decades, the conference brought together more than 450 delegates from over 22 countries under the theme “The African Edition: Shaping the Future of Fresh Produce Markets through Sustainability, Innovation and Inclusivity.” The event highlighted Africa’s growing leadership in shaping resilient, sustainable and inclusive food systems through modern wholesale markets.
Across all sessions, a common message emerged: wholesale markets are essential infrastructure for resilient food systems, playing a critical role in stabilising prices, reducing food loss, supporting producers, integrating informal economies and ensuring affordable access to fresh produce.
The report concludes with three strategic priorities that will shape WUWM’s agenda in the coming years:
- Strengthening global food system resilience
- Accelerating innovation and digital transformation
- Advancing inclusive economic and territorial development.
As highlighted throughout the publication, wholesale markets are no longer simply trading platforms—they are strategic assets for governments and cities seeking to build sustainable, efficient and inclusive food systems capable of responding to climate, economic and geopolitical challenges.
