2025 WUWM Brussels Conference Report
From 5 to 7 November 2025, the World Union of Wholesale Markets (WUWM), together with Mabru Wholesale Market, welcomed nearly 200 delegates from more than 30 countries to Brussels for the 42nd WUWM Conference, under the theme “The Future of Wholesale Markets: Leadership, Performance and Transition.”
The conference highlighted how wholesale markets are evolving beyond their traditional trading role to become strategic infrastructures for food security, urban resilience and sustainable development. As WUWM Chairman Stéphane Layani recalled, between 50 and 60% of fresh produce worldwide is distributed through wholesale markets.
Innovation, megacities and sustainability
Digital transformation was a central theme. Speakers presented concrete applications of artificial intelligence, automated ordering, demand forecasting, traceability and smart logistics, while stressing that innovation must remain human-centred, transparent and responsible.
The challenge of feeding rapidly growing cities was another key focus. Experiences from Milan, Johannesburg and Nigeria demonstrated the importance of modern wholesale infrastructure, local and regional sourcing, multimodal logistics and stronger cooperation between markets and public authorities.
The conference also explored the environmental and social responsibilities of wholesale markets. Initiatives such as the DREAM project at Mabru and the ANDES-SOS network at Rungis showed how markets can transform surplus food into a resource for vulnerable communities while reducing food waste.
Building the next generation of wholesale markets
The Brussels discussions pointed towards a new generation of wholesale markets: digital, interconnected, sustainable and integrated into urban food policies. Investments in renewable energy, efficient refrigeration, circular economy solutions and smarter logistics are already accelerating this transition worldwide.
As WUWM General Secretary Valérie Vion emphasised, “Wholesale markets are not just business hubs, they are also strategic public spaces.”
The Brussels Conference reaffirmed WUWM’s commitment to international cooperation and knowledge sharing, ensuring wholesale markets remain at the heart of resilient, sustainable and inclusive food systems.
